Actress Instructed to Reveal Title in IMDB Suit

The actress suing Hollywood information database IMDb for listing her true age cannot proceed with the situation unless of course she discloses her identity, a federal judge has ruled.Inside a dramatically-phrased decision released on Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman discovered that as the anonymous actress who prosecuted for $a million fears blacklisting along with other retribution in Hollywood if her true identity is famous, "the injuries she fears isn't severe enough to warrant enabling her to proceed anonymously," the ruling states.Judge Pechman gave the lady who prosecuted as "Jane Doe" fourteen days to refile the situation under her very own title or it will likely be ignored. The lady now must decide to either move ahead under her real title or drop the lawsuit entirely. The IMDb situation, first filed in October against IMDb and parent Amazon . com, argues that stars who're regarded as "past their primeInch at 40 have trouble finding work. The situation is becoming something of the lightning fishing rod in Hollywood as both actor guilds, SAG and AFTRA, backed the suit, quarrelling the listing service reveals stars to discrimination in ageist casting circles. Another actor later came toward blast IMDb for listing his age improperly within an opinion piece released through the Hollywood Reporter. In the motion to dismiss, IMDb contended the actress had been "selfish" which she wouldn't suffer significant discrimination from revealing her actual title within the suit. The judge basically agreed, siding using the strong public curiosity about litigants proceeding publically in open court. She rejected to award financial sanctions either to side. The lady, who apparently resides in Texas, must now decide if the situation is worthwhile of litigating in public places. We have arrived at to her lawyer, John Dozier, for comment and can update having a response. The Hollywood Reporter

Spiner to helm 'Olvido'

MADRID -- Fernando Spiner, whose Gaucho Western "Aballay" walked away using the lion's share of kudos at Monday's Argentine Oscars ceremony, will adapt another Argentine classic: "Mas alla del olvido." Argentina's foreign-language Oscar submission, "Aballay" adjusts a celebrated short story by Antonio Di Benedetto. Helmer-scribe Spiner's "Olvido" is really a remake from the Argentine movie of the identical title directed by Hugo del Carril in 1956. The amour fou tale has Del Carril being an Argentine ranch-owner tripping in Paris upon a cabaret dancer who's a defunct ringer for his deceased wife. Taking her to Argentina, he attempts to change her in to the spitting picture of his former spouse. But tragedy strikes once again. "Del Carril may be the Orson Welles of Argentine cinema, a director, actor, producer, film writer and music performer," stated Spiner. The 1956 "Olvido" adjusts 1892 novel "Bruges-la-Morte," by Belgium's Georges Rodenbach. Spiner stated it inspired 1954 French crime novel "The Living and also the Dead," acquired by Alfred Hitchcock for that 1958 pic "Vertigo." "Olvido" is to establish at Spiner's Buenos Aires label, Boya Films. Spiner aims to enter production late 2012, shooting in Argentina. On Monday, Spiner scooped eight Argentine Oscars for "Aballay," including director, actress (Moro Anghileri), cinematography and modified script. Yeah, Baby: Austin Powers Reportedly Headed to Broadway

Just when you thought that Hollywood had run out of hit movies to adapt into Broadway musicals, word is spreading that Mike Myers is in discussions to translate his ’60s spy spoof series for the stage. But just how involved will the franchise creator and star be in Austin Powers: The Musical — especially when he is reportedly busy writing a fourth film installment for the British secret agent? A source close to the actor confirmed the news to the NY Post: “Mike is in talks to turn Austin Powers into a musical stage show. Mike would be heavily involved in writing the show, but he will not star in it, even though he has quite a good singing voice.” So yes, as clarified, the actor (with quite a good singing voice) — last seen in Inglourious Basterds and last heard in Shrek Forever After — will not be starring in the musical Austin Powers. After all, that would be a wildly taxing feat considering Myers played four different roles in the franchise (Austin Powers, Doctor Evil, Fat Bastard and Goldmember). Myers is also reportedly busy penning a fourth Austin Powers movie that is anticipated to arrive in theaters in 2013 or 2014. The last film, Austin Powers in Goldmember, was released in 2002. Is this a movie-to-musical adaptation that you will get behind? Or is your mojo rising more for Rocky’s German stage premiere? ‘Powers’ bound for B’way [NYP]

David Fincher's Dragon Tattoogate Embargo Solution: No Early Screenings for Critics

Film bloggers and pundits and awards season watchers have pecked this David Denby-Scott Rudin exchange to death with no clear consensus or solution, but one player in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo kerfuffle has a solution. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t show movies to anybody before they were released,” director David Fincher told the Miami Herald. “…If I had my way, the NY Film Critics Circle would not have seen this movie and then we would not be in this situation.” More wishful thinking from Fincher after the jump! According to Fincher, he was against the early special NY Film Critics Circle screening from the start. (Not that it helped much anyway.) And though he admits to wrestling with Rudin over the very subject of early screenings, he agrees with Rudin’s argument that embargo-breaking reviews can potentially do harm to the business of a film. “I think Scott [Rudin]’s response was totally correct. It’s a hard thing for people outside our business to understand. It is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. But as silly as this may all look from the outside — privileged people bickering — I think it’s important. Film critics are part of the business of getting movies made. You swim in the same water we swim in. And there is a business to letting people know your movie is coming out. It is not a charity business. It is a business-business.This is not about controlling the media. If people realized how much thought goes into deciding at what point can we allow our movie to be seen, they would understand. There are so many other things constantly screaming for people’s attention. I started shooting this movie 25 days after I turned in The Social Network. We have been working really hard to make this release date. And when you’re trying to orchestrate a build-up of anticipation, it is extremely frustrating to have someone agree to something and then upturn the apple cart and change the rules — for everybody. Yes, it’s a business, and there are financial stakes at hand for a film and its makers surrounding the timing of release, the window of a marketing campaign, and the delicate dance studios do with critics in risking negative reviews from early screenings. But Fincher’s wrong; the Denby-Rudin incident is about controlling the media, or at least holding critics to a predetermined set of agreed-upon (but not mutually created) parameters that dictate when certain films may be written about. It’s control in exchange for access — a tricky and often precarious see-saw of interests to balance. And that relationship gets even trickier in awards season, now that Sony’s early gamble (the NYFCC special screening) did not pan out as planned, leaving Dragon Tattoo with no early honors with which to kick-off its concerted Oscar campaign. Then again, Fincher’s ideal scenario for releasing a film is clearly not feasible either, barring some new world order in the film industry. Would it be nice to not have films utterly (or even just partially) spoiled by trailers and clips and marketing materials? Sure! But would the general public buy tickets just purely out of love for the cinema without a promotional machine to entice them this way or that — or without the film critics that can indeed guide moviegoers in the choices they make? No. (Is this a matter of “privileged people bickering?” Kinda.) Filmmakers certainly couldn’t have it both ways, in any case, and still be in “business-business.” So the industry needs film critics. It needs trusted channels through which audiences may be reached. There are going to be embargoes, and whether critics decide to adhere to them is their choice; whether the studios choose to enforce violations is up to them. (Oh, the countless times unsanctioned early reviews have been ignored on films of lesser importance!) For more, including Fincher’s description of the “most valuable film critics” (i.e. not the professional ones), head to Rene Rodriguez’s Miami Herald report. Rappers, rockers drive Grammy nominations

Kanye West leads the 2012 Grammy field with seven noms.Pop-soul powerhouse Adele collected six Grammy bids, including album of the year for '21,' the year's top-selling title. The Foo Fighters' 'Wasting Light' is in the race for album of the year.Move over, Taylor -- Kanye's in the house.Nominations for the 2012 Grammy Awards give big props to short-fused rapper Kanye West, but pop-country darling Taylor Swift, one of the year's biggest sellers, was shut out of the major categories.Top nods for the Recording Academy's 54th Grammys -- to be telecast live from Staples Center on Feb. 12 -- were announced Wednesday during a one-hour show at Nokia Theater, aired live in the East on CBS for the fourth year running.Leading the list of nominees this year is West, who drew seven nods. Adele, Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars all collected six noms, while Lil Wayne and Skrillex will compete in five categories.Up for album of the year are Adele's "21," Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" and Rihanna's "Loud."Contending for record of the year (presented to the artist, producers, engineers and mixers) are Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Bon Iver's "Holocene," Mars' "Grenade," Mumford & Sons' "The Cave" and Katy Perry's "Firework."The field for song of the year (a cleffer's award) comprises West's "All of the Lights" (written by Jeff Bhasker, Malik Jones, Warren Trotter and West), "The Cave" (by Ted Dwayne, Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford and Country Winston), "Grenade" (by Brody Brown, Claude Kelly, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Andrew Wyatt and Mars), "Holocene" (by Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver), and "Rolling in the Deep" (by Adele and Paul Epworth).Best new artist nominees are sibling country act the Band Perry, neo-folkie Bon Iver, rappers J. Cole and Nicki Minaj and dance artist Skrillex. All but one of West's nominations came in genre slots. Conspicuous by its absence in the album of the year category is his hit "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," which entered the chart at No. 1 with a 496,000-unit week last December. His hot-selling 2011 collaboration with Jay-Z, "Watch the Throne," was similarly dissed. While West has rung up 14 Grammy wins since 2005's ceremony, the lippy rapper has never been accorded recognition in any of the major categories, and he has been vocal in his displeasure about that slight.Pop-soul powerhouse Adele (ne Adele Adkins), 2011's breakout superstar, has already found favor among Grammy voters: she reaped two awards at the 2009 ceremony, including best new artist. She's this year's uncontested sales champ: Her sophomore album "21" has sold nearly 4.7 million copies since its release in February, moving more than 100,000 copies per week for the life of its run. It dropped out of the top five on the U.S. album chart for the first time only this week.Sadly, dismissal of Swift's late-2010 smash "Fearless" and its attendant hits in the major categories will rob the 54th Grammys of what could have been a rousing competition between Adele and contemporary pop's other 21-year-old luminary. Swift -- winner of four Grammys in 2010 -- collected three nods, including best country album, in genre categories. The Recording Academy instead decided to shower nominations on Foo Fighters, the alt-rock unit fronted by former Nirvana skin man Dave Grohl. A NARAS favorite, act has won half a dozen Grammys since 2000.Though Lady Gaga only began her recording career three years ago, she already qualifies as a Grammy darling, despite her technical elimination from best new artist consideration two years back.Gaga has five wins to her credit, moving out of the electronic/dance niche into pop terrain at the 2011 awards show with triumphs in the female pop vocal and pop vocal album categories. The predecessors to "Born This Way," her debut "The Fame" and its sequel "The Fame Monster," also collected album of the year nods. "Born" arrived at No. 1 in June behind a 1.1 million-unit sales week.Singer-songwriter-producer Mars -- whose hit "Just the Way You Are" collected a best male pop vocal performance award earlier this year -- makes a prominent showing in the '12 competish with acknowledgement in three of the top slots.Despite country's ongoing sales potency, it received short shrift in this year's major nominations. Swift, trio Lady Antebellum (last year's record of the year and song of the year winner) and rising rock-friendly vocalist Jason Aldean -- the authors of mega-selling sets -- are all glaringly absent from the so-called "general field" of top nominees. On the film and TV side, best compilation soundtrack nominees include "Boardwalk Empire: Volume 1," "Burlesque," "Glee: The Music, Volume 4," "Tangled" and "True Blood: Volume 3."Alexandre Desplat swept up two nominations in the best score soundtrack category, a composer's award, for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" and "The King's Speech." Other nods were granted to Clint Mansell ("The Black Swan), Ryan Shore ("The Shrine") and dance-pop duo Daft Punk ("Tron Legacy").Nominated for best song written for visual media are "Born to Be Somebody" (from the Justin Bieber vehicle "Never Say Never," by Diane Warren), "Christmastime is Killing Us" (from "Family Guy," by Ron Jones, Seth MacFarlane and Danny Smith), "I See the Light" (from "Tangled," by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater), "So Long" (from "Winnie the Pooh," by Zooey Deschanel), "Where the River Goes" (from "Footloose," by Zac Brown, Wyatt Durrette, Drew Pearson and Anne Preven) and "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" (from the Cher-Christina Aguilera pic "Burlesque," also by Warren).Cast recordings of the Tony-winning legit tuner "The Book of Mormon" and revivals of "Anything Goes" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" will compete for best musical theater album. The 2012 Grammy nominees list is less voluminous than in years past: In April, the Recording Academy pared the number of categories to 78 from 109, eliminating many niche slots and unifying vocal awards in pop, R&B and country. Move sparked an outcry among some performers and a still-pending class-action lawsuit.Material released between Oct. 1, 2010 and Sept. 30, 2011 was eligible for 2012 Grammys consideration.Click here for the complete list of nominees. British director Ken Russell dies

LONDON -- Ken Russell, an iconoclastic British director whose daring films blended music, sex and violence in a potent brew seemingly drawn straight from his subconscious, has died at age 84. Russell died in a hospital on Sunday following a series of strokes, his son Alex Verney-Elliott said Monday. "My father died peacefully," Verney-Elliott said. "He died with a smile on his face." Russell was a fiercely original director whose vision occasionally brought mainstream success, but often tested the patience of audiences and critics. He had one of his biggest hits in 1969 with "Women in Love," based on the book by D.H. Lawrence, which earned Academy Award nominations for the director and for writer Larry Kramer, and a "Best Actress" Oscar for the star, Glenda Jackson. It included one of the decade's most famous scenes -- a nude wrestling bout between Alan Bates and Oliver Reed. Reed said at the time that the director was "starting to go crazy." "Before that he was a sane, likable TV director," Reed said. "Now he's an insane, likable film director." Born in the English port of Southampton in 1927, Russell was attracted by the romance of the sea and attended Pangbourne Nautical College before joining the Merchant Navy at 17 as a junior crew member on a cargo ship bound for the Pacific. He became seasick, soon realized he hated naval life and was discharged after a nervous breakdown. Desperate to avoid joining the family's shoe business, he studied ballet and tried his hand at acting before accepting he was not much good at either. He then studied photography, for which he did have a talent, and became a fashion photographer before being hired to work on BBC arts programs, including profiles of the poet John Betjeman, comedian Spike Milligan and playwright Shelagh Delaney. "When there were no more live artists left, we turned to making somewhat longer films about dead artists such as Prokofiev," Russell once said. These quickly evolved from conventional documentaries into something more interesting. "At first we were only allowed to use still photographs and newsreel footage of these subjects, but eventually we sneaked in the odd hand playing the piano (in 'Prokofiev') and the odd back walking through a door," Russell said. "By the time a couple of years had gone by, those boring little factual accounts of the artists had evolved into evocative films of an hour or more which used real actors to impersonate the historical figures." Music played a central role in many of Russell's films, including "The Music Lovers" in 1970 -- about Tchaikovsky -- and 1975's "Lisztomania," which starred Roger Daltrey of The Who as 19th-century heartthrob Franz Liszt. "The Boy Friend," a 1971 homage to 1930s Hollywood musicals starring supermodel Twiggy, and Russell's 1975 adaptation of The Who's psychedelic rock opera "Tommy," were musicals of a different sort, both marked by the director's characteristic visual excess. Russell's darker side was rarely far away. "Dante's Inferno," a 1967 movie about the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, played up the differences between Rossetti's idealized view of his wife and her reality as a drug addict. Russell was even more provocative in his 1970 film "The Dance of the Seven Veils: A Comic Strip in Seven Episodes." It presented the composer Richard Strauss as a crypto-Nazi, and showed him conducting Rosenkavalier waltzes while SS men tortured a Jew. "The Devils," a 1971 film starring Vanessa Redgrave as a 17th-century nun in the grip of demonic possession, was heavily cut for its U.S. release and is due to be released on DVD in Britain for the first time in 2012. Russell told The Associated Press in 1987 that he found such censorship "so tedious and boring." He called the American print of "The Devils" ''just a butchered nonsense." Critics were often unimpressed by Russell's work. Alexander Walker called him a master of "the porno-biography which is not quite pornography but is far from being biography." Pauline Kael said his films "cheapen everything they touch." But admirers luxuriated in his Gothic sensibility -- on display once again in "Gothic," a 1987 film about the genesis of Mary Shelley's horror tale "Frankenstein" replete with such hallucinatory visuals as breasts with eyes and mouths spewing cockroaches. Russell said his depiction of a drug-addled Percy Bysshe Shelley was an accurate depiction of the time. "Everyone in England in the 19th century was on a permanent trip. He must have been stoned out of his mind for years," Russell said. "I know I am." Russell's fascination with changing mental states also surfaced in 1980 film "Altered States," a rare Hollywood foray for him, starring William Hurt as a scientist experimenting with hallucinogens. It was poorly received. Later films included the comic horror thriller "The Lair of the White Worm" in 1989, which gave an atypical early role to Hugh Grant as a vampire worm-battling lord of the manor. Russell also directed operas and made the video for Elton John's "Nikita." Married four times, Russell is survived by his wife Elise Tribble and his children. Funeral details were not immediately announced. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Peter Webber to Direct Japanese World War II Epic 'Emperor'

Peter Webber is set to direct the historical epic Emperor, set in the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II when Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his staff decided not to pursue war crimes against Emperor Hirohito. Webber (Girl with a Pearl Earring) will begin shooting the film in January 2012 from a script by David Klass and Vera Blasi. Yoko Narahashi (The Last Samurai), Gary Foster (Daredevil, Sleepless in Seattle) and Eugene Nomura (Tajomaru, Surely Some Day) and Russ Krasnoff (The Soloist) are producing. Inspired by true events, Emperor focuses on American Gen. Bonner Fellers, a leading Japanese expert who works on MacArthur's staff and is put in charge of the Hirohito case. The story is interwoven with Fellers' love affair with Aya, a Japanese exchange student he had met years earlier in the U.S. "I immediately responded to the intelligence, humanity and emotion of the script. It's a fascinating period of history and there are strong parallels to the contemporary world in the issues of regime change and seeking revenge against the old political order. The fact that all this came wrapped up in a tense political thriller with an epic love story at the heart of it made it irresistible," Webber said. CAA is representing domestic rights. Webber will shoot in New Zealand and Japan, and casting is underway. "The end of World War II in the far east and the relationship between General MacArthur and Japan is a part of history which has been largely unexplored in film. With most documents burned, historians have relied on accounts which are being debated to this day," Foster said. Narahashi, who runs Fellers Film with Nomura, said the project is important in that it is a joint Japanese-U.S.-U.K. movie. Related Topics

Fabio Viviani Is Finally Top Chef in the "Super Sexy" Chow Ciao

Fabio Viviani Fabio Viviani fielded his share of Tv program pitches the ultimate few years - including one with Bravo that never found fruition - nevertheless the forever quotable Top Chef alum finally grew to become an associate of forces with Yahoo!, not just a network, to create his Italian-cooking series Chow Ciao. "[While using previous TV pitches] I used to be kind of positioned on the area for doing content for your network rather than be myself," Viviani notifies TVGuide.com. "Once Yahoo! approached me, they just asked for me being me." The 3-to-5 minute episodes, part of Yahoo!'s new slate of online shows, go live every Monday and features Viviani showing his favorite dishes, which, clearly don't include burgers (or "boor-gers"). Uncover what else you could expect within the series, if Viviani will pop on top Chef again, and the way his beloved turtle does.Drop Preview: Get scoop inside your favorite returning showsHow did all this happen?Fabio Viviani: Yahoo! asked for me. They mentioned they'd the viewership as well as the means as well as the creative side to help [me] attend [my] best. Once I heard that there's somebody that was ready to showcase who I am and a few things i am about, this is where I made a decision to synergy. Honestly, the finish result, I really could Not more comfortable. I believe that it is good. That's me there.Perhaps you have such as this it absolutely was online, particularly with social media so large at this time around and you're simply an passionate tweeter yourself?Viviani: Yes. Besides [Yahoo!'s viewership], the main one factor I really like most likely probably the most relevant for this is the Internet will there be - 24/7/365. Without warning, when ready. TV is what's been a sizable deal up to now, but a platform like Yahoo! will most likely be what's ahead. This is actually the future and that we are starting the right way. People are busy and not everybody can sit before a tv from 8 to 9 or from 2 to 3 inside the mid-day. So using this method, we create content that's honest, easy and quick to get. You will see inside your apple apple iphone when you are riding a bus to go to work. And that means you receive the best of both cell phone industry's because the show is really well shot - it is the standard you'd find on any network or Tv program with the advantage of being on the internet. How involved are you currently presently with each episode?Viviani: I choose the recipe, I choose this content, I decide items to say. The phenomenal crew and production company appear with camera and so they ensure to improve whatever is me and show for you personally within the simplest possible way. We interact. I decide ninety five percent from the products to consider, which is probably the main reasons why I made a decision being here. Everything I have faith that and everything I really do is really because If only to and also, since For me it, not because I have to condition that being on tv. It's very truthful content driven by whoever does each show. ... I decide what direction to go, in what step, we determine that together. It is therefore not scripted [because "this is just what you will find here,Inch but it's scripted to date as how it will run lower, like "we first have that will help you chop this." This is when the assistance of producer can be found in play. They tell me the best way to organize my idea throughout my thoughts and the way making it look wonderful on camera. How perhaps you have choose the standard quality recipes?Viviani: Well, they found me and mentioned, "Give me an idea to complete?Inch I mentioned, "If only to create a proceed to basic principles, super sexy, easy to do, handful of elements that you can do any particular time.Inch They mentioned, "Great! Give to us 40 quality quality recipes and we'll pick 26, and 26 episodes is what's before us for the moment." We did something with sea food, fresh pasta, fundamental sauces. You probably know how it is said Cooking 101? I'd say that is Cooking 105. It's a little a lot more than 101, but it's really to basic principles.Top Chef's Fabio: "Everybody's a painful loser"Are you currently presently cooking burgers? They were your Achilles' heel on top Chef.Viviani: [Laughs] You understand? Maybe we'll for that finish, possibly an added bonus clip. However still cannot pronounce it. Look, essentially understood the best way to pronounce it, probably I'd do them. I can create a Panini and blow your socks off, but a hamburger, I'll stick with White-colored Castle and Five Males. You're close along with your grandmother. Simply how much did she influence these quality quality recipes?Viviani: one hundred percent from the standard quality recipes I can do result from my family members history, technique or passion. The initial episode had eggs [for just about any frittata] because eggs were the initial factor I mastered around. I had been elevated with my family members way below the poverty level being happy and also to possess some meat available. And then we had eggs each day because that was minimal costly factor we are in a position to have the ability to buy that was most likely probably the most healthy items you find. ... That was not just a happy in time my existence. Each day you take in eggs because of there being very little else? You want to escape from that situation as soon as you'll be able to. So that it made sense to produce that [the primary focus of] the initial episode. You've two restaurants, a cookbook, a collection, now you do Domino's ads too.Viviani: Yes, well, I'm Italian which i eat pizza! That's all there's in it. They asked for me [for] information on flavor and craft which i gave it on their behalf, which i eat it! I wouldn't synergy with somebody essentially didn't such as the things they are doing or I didn't eat [their product] myself ... As extended after i like a few things i do, this is the only goal in my opinion. Top Chef heads to Texas for Season 9Top Chef: Texas is premiering soon. Are you currently presently associated with this season whatsoever?Viviani: I'm not. You won't see me on Season 9. I didn't go back to evaluate or anything. I lost two occasions, therefore i think I'm finished with Top Chef, maybe. I am unsure. But you never know with Bravo. I like Bravo. It's a great cable [network]. If perhaps them the most effective for your approaching season. They deserve it. It's a great show. Now i'm on Chow Ciao. The good thing about that certain is always that A) I'm not getting began out because I'll never kick myself out and B) whatever I really do, I am the judge from this. Not Tom [Colicchio], not Padma [Lakshmi]. I like you, males, but sorry, ignore tasting my food! [Laughs] I am likely to be top chef each day here! How's your turtle doing?Viviani: She's fantastic! Once we are speaking, I have employees within my house building, like, a 3,000-gallon pond outdoors. I have got a lot of obligations for next season, so she cannot stay in the aquarium any more. I'm doing an outdoors pond with live sea food and plants and waterfall. It's a little turtle paradise. It'll be produced by spring. Now it's freezing to put the turtle out and I'd rather not leave her with influenza. It's probably 12 foot extended and 6- or 7-foot wide, and 4- or 5-foot deep. It's beautiful. Will she produce a cameo on Chow Ciao?Viviani: She may. You never know. She developed a cameo on top Chef already once i was walking her by helping cover their a leash, however it's freezing. I am unable to walk her out at this time around. ... The aquarium is, like, 400 gallons it's large. It can't do without anyone's understanding. For individuals who've a kitchen that could result in the background a 400-gallon aquarium, you handled to obtain already! You don't need a tv show! [Laughs]

Pinewood reaches out to U.K. indies

Pinewoods sprawling lot in Buckinghamshire has long been home to Hollywood blockbusters like James Bond pics and 'Mamma Mia!' with a set built on the studios grounds. Now, Pinewood is taking an equity stake in four low-budget indie films per year. The 'Mamma Mia!' set. With the first two indie features rolling under its new production initiative, the U.K.'s historic Pinewood Studios is making good on its promise to invest in young British talent. In doing so, the studio is hoping to position itself as a standard-bearer for the entire British film industry, and not just as a home away from home for Hollywood blockbusters. The first film out was "A Fantastic Fear of Everything," a $4.8 million comedy starring Simon Pegg, co-directed by Chris Hopewell and rock star Crispian Mills, which shot this summer. Pinewood is co-financing with Indomina and Universal. The second, Omid Nooshin's $2.5 million train thriller "Last Passenger" starring Dougray Scott, is shooting. Pinewood is investing alongside the British Film Institute, a notable alliance between culture and industry. Despite Pinewood's iconic status, a gulf has long existed between its sprawling lot in leafy Buckinghamshire and the creative community of independent British filmmakers who ply their trade in and around central London's Soho district. Since it was founded by flour millionaire J. Arthur Rank in 1936, Pinewood has always stood for commerce rather than art, best known for the James Bond and "Carry On" franchises. In recent decades, it has prospered as an offshore haven for lavish Hollywood productions attracted by the U.K.'s tax breaks, talent and crews. One veteran producer with a foot in both camps has labelled this schism between the industrialized model and the cultural model of British filmmaking as the Soho-Pinewood Divide. But now Pinewood, which also owns nearby Shepperton, is looking to bridge the gap. In March, it announced a plan to invest in a handful of low-budget films each year from new British talent. "We want to make sure Pinewood isn't just perceived to be that big studio where they make the Bond films and the big American movies," says the group's commercial director, Nick Smith. "We've got to get more of an affinity with the younger generation of British filmmakers." Smith says current management, which took over the studio a decade ago from Rank, has long wanted to develop a much more intimate relationship with customers rather than just being known as a big facility. "We've had an appetite for first-time directors to be our customers, but we've not given them the tools to come and use our facilities." Pinewood initially experimented with ad hoc investments in Noel Clarke's "4.3.2.1" and Jordan Scott's "Cracks." The results were mixed -- Smith describes it as a learning experience -- but encouraging enough for the studio to announce its more formal production initiative in March. The plan is to invest in four films a year with budgets around $3 million-$4 million, providing a mix of facilities and cash for an equity stake. Pinewood received 100 scripts within a week of the announcement. True to the studio's history, Smith, who is working closely with producer Steve Norris to select the projects, is looking for commercial, not arthouse, fare, but is committed to taking a risk on first-timers. "We learned to have more discipline and more structure about the way packages are put together and the way you work with other investors" Smith says. Smith insists that the initiative isn't about filling spare capacity, but about building long-term relationships. In fact, Pinewood and Shepperton have been bursting at the seams this year, with even mega-budget projects such as "Prometheus," "Dark Shadows" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" complaining they can't get enough space. Both "A Fantastic Fear of Everything" and "Last Passenger" squeezed into Shepperton. "It's quite challenging, but we make every effort to satisfy the needs of absolutely everyone," Smith says. "The history of the British film industry is full of peaks and troughs, so we've got to prepare for the next trough by building our relationships with people coming up." The sums involved for Pinewood are small, but the symbolic and political value is significant. The press release announcing the production plan contained an approving quote from the U.K.'s Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, which was a clear indication of Pinewood's larger agenda. The studio needs ministerial approval to OK its $320 million Project Pinewood expansion, whose planning application was initially blocked and is now being appealed. The final decision is expected some time in 2012. More broadly, Pinewood toppers are acutely aware that the studio's prosperity is dependent upon the British government's willingness to maintain its generous tax credit for incoming Hollywood productions. Execs are determined to show that Pinewood is not merely the passive recipient of the government's largesse, but that its success benefits British filmmaking as a whole. "We have a brand, we have a position in the U.K. film industry, and we're absolutely trying to step up to the plate," Smith says. "We have a genuine desire to help British directors and producers who are struggling to get their films made." n Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Weekend Receipts: Lion King Plays Hardball Against Moneyball

The “Circle of Existence” remains unchecked because the Lion King (in three dimensional) capped Moneyball to win the weekend receipt war for any second week consecutively. Kaira Pitt is not to become embarrassed with, though, as the love project notched the greatest opening weekend for just about any baseball movie ever. Actually, a few large records were set a few days ago. Following the jump, we’ll count lower the greatest earners and lament the plight of Rachelle Lefervre. 1. The Lion King (in three dimensional) Gross: $22,130,000 ($61,676,000) Screens: 2,330 Although it arrived second on Friday’s tally, The Lion King (in three dimensional) roared again on Saturday — a larger movie day for families — and drawn through having a slim victory. However, may be the Lion King truly the Disney jam you want to see in fulgent 3-D? I’d give almost anything to see Cruella p Vil’s husky fur coat and jutting clavicle defy some time and space. 2. Moneyball Gross: $20,600,000 (new) Screens: 2,993 Though he lost his legendary hair fight with Robert Redford yesterday, Kaira Pitt can continue to call themself a victor: Moneyball’s earnings put it in front of Benchwarmers, The Rookie, and my beloved A League that belongs to them’s opening weekends (not counting for inflation). It’s an very well-examined movie too, meaning we ought to expect it to stay a large player within the days in the future. The question for you is what type of Oscar contender it's. 3. Dolphin Tale Gross: $20,260,000 (new) Screens: 3,507 Oh, had you been considering counting out Harry Connick Junior. and also the miracle of whales out of this roundup? You fool. Dolphin Tale’s very proud showing makes this the very first September weekend ever to feature three films with $20 million intakes. I would like a follow up known as Memphis Beluga. Now, to the sadness. 4. Abduction Gross: $11,200,000 (new) Screens: 3,118 Despite the fact that the immortal Sigourney Weaver charmed us within this mixed-up, ultimately silly movie, unhealthy buzz and unconvincing starpower of Rachelle Lefervre set Abduction up for any weak turnout. Let’s consider the good side: Sigourney loves Hitchcock movies and it is prepared to discuss them thorough. Redemption. 5. Killer Elite Gross: $9,500,000 Screens: 2,986 And the other factor about bad buzz: Following the first trailer for Killer Elite made an appearance, writers agreed the film would be a nondescript Jason Statham vehicle that happened to costar Clive Owen and Robert P Niro. Following the red-colored band trailer made an appearance, its fate was sealed. A lot more like Killer Remove. Guh-her. 6. Contagion Gross: $8,565,000 ($57,122,000) Screens: 3,136 I, for just one, miss when Contagion was the large champion. There have been “contagious” head lines to become made, Purell puns to become hewn, and Peggy Lee-assisted “Fever” montages to edit. Now all I would like is really a Peggy Lee-assisted Lady and also the Tramp (in three dimensional)” motion picture experience. Please spew this forth, Disney vault. Weekend Chart [Box Office Mojo]

Leven Rambin Finds Mavericks

She'll hang 10 with Gerard ButlerLeven Rambin acquired a sizable film break this year when she won the role of Glimmer, one of the tributes who participate in the dangerous gladiatorial event that comprises the central competition inside the Hunger Games. Also it seems that she's now punching the radar of other filmmakers, with Curtis Hanson picking her since the female lead for surfing pic Mavericks. Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston are starring inside the true story of legendary large wave surfer Jay Moriarty's ride from his sport. Butler is onto play Ron "Chilled" Hesson, the man who mentored the greater youthful Moriarty (Weston) and seen him become most likely the most known audiences of his generation. Moriarty increased being most broadly noted for his reliance on the Northern California surf place known to as Mavericks (hence the title), where the waves during the cold months several weeks is capable of as much as five-storey structures. Getting a script by Brandon Hooper, Hanson is planning to direct the film, though there's no set start date yet.

Execs Talk Future Of 3D, Distribution And Technology In Entertainment

The Irish Technology Leadership Group launched its Hollywood chapter tonight with an eventat Sony Pictures Studios that included a panel discussion among execs from companies such as HBO, Warner Bros and BBC Worldwide. Panelists at Innovation in Entertainment, as the evening was billed, discussed the new ways people consume entertainment, how much they’re willing to pay for it (increasingly, that amount is nothing, one said), and whether they’ve even caught up to all the technology out there. The future is in knowing how to pitch and make the right product at the right time and place, said Jay Roewe, HBO’s SVP West Coast production. “Computer programmers that understand the film biz — that’s the kind of people I want to work with because I know I’m going to adapt to the future in a very big way,” Roewe said. One example of HBO embracing technology is social media integration in its new comedy series Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “The producers said, ‘If you have these ideas you want to do, come to us.’ The core is our programming, but it’s leading us down the road to other content,” Roewe said. TheVeep team decided to work Twitter into the show so viewers can follow along at home. Roewe also detailed a cost-cutting measure on HBO’s epicGame of Thrones, which shot in Belfast using a new digital camera instead of film, a risk that technology allowed the team to take. Robert Nashak, EVP digital entertainment at BBC Worldwide, touted a Torchwood app in conjunction with Starz that features content written by the series’ scribes and voiced by its actors. The app creates alternate story worlds and “reaches users anywhere they happen to be,” Nashak said. Another extra for BBC Worldwide is a massively multiplayer online game for sci-fi series Doctor Who, which would bring gamer data to the network, in addition to its “actionable analytics” — Twitter and Facebook activity that reveals how viewers feel about different parts of the show. “This data will be useful and relied on more and more as time goes on,” Nashak said. The shift in distribution platforms is another growing concern. Warner Bros’ SVP postproduction Bill Daly said he sees the industry eventually providing content directly to the consumer. Because of this, companies are looking to move away from the idea that you “launch it and leave it,” said Nashak. “The community and fanbase need constant nurturing.” One remaining sticking point in tech innovations is 3D. Daly credited 3D with the proliferation of digital cinema, but Rich Moran, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist on the panel, shot back, “I’m not so sure about 3D.” He then made an example of the evening’s earlier speaker George Bailey, Sony’s chief transformation officer, who had donned a Sony visor at the podium. The U-shaped visor, which the company unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, allows its wearer to watch a movie on the equivalent of a 750-inch TV screen. Moran said there might be great technology in the visor, he just doesn’t know what it is, and said that technology is moving far ahead of what consumers are willing to accept. “Until you get rid of the glasses, it’s not going to happen,” he said of 3D. Moran thinks what shapes the future from the VC point of view is a “glimmer of greatness, like the Sony visor. They know it’s all converging. Any company that can prove they have a big idea, there’s money to invest.” But Moran also made the point that the expectation from consumers is that entertainment is going to be free. “If it isn’t free, they’ll find a way to get it for free,” he said. So on top of doubts about fans of 3D wanting to walk around their home wearing a visor, there’s the price tag of the gadgets and the content itself. Rovi president and CEO Fred Amoroso sees 3D being used in homes now, and he said as the trend grows, it will be available on more devices. “It’ll have its niches, just like any technology,” Amoroso said. The chief of Rovi, which focuses on digital home entertainment products, said the biggest challenge in entertainment technology is not the next big thing, but the adoption of what’s here now. He said studios shouldn’t feel the need to adapt, but “be willing to take risks and take the opportunity to innovate.” The ITLG is a four-year-old nonprofit with chapters in Silicon Valley and NY. It aims to help Ireland embrace new technology and to promote Northern Ireland as a contributor to the entertainment world. The night’s panel was moderated by Bloomberg TV senior producer Nora Zimmett.
