Exactly what is a cinemagraph you request? Based on Filmmaker.com, they're "still photographs where a minor and repeated movement action happens." As you can tell below (and in the 'Clockwork Orange' one above), whomever made these made the decision to choose probably the most unsettling moments in Kubrick film history. Which Movie Should Christian Bale Make Next?

According to Variety, Christian Bale’s got a big decision coming up once he completes filming on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises: What to do next? With no fewer than five juicy options to pick from — each with a notable director and vastly different material — Bale might need a little help choosing. So let’s help him out! (I vote for Newsies 2: Still Carrying the Banner, a gritty period sequel that picks up 20 years later, with paperboy Jack Kelly now a full-grown paper man. Then again, Newsies is such a well-contained classic in itself, perhaps it doesn’t need a sequel.) Ahem. Onward to the five potential next projects Bale has to choose from once he’s done donning Batman’s suit. (Not listed: another possible team-up with Terrence Malick that was reported as rumor last week.) A Star Is Born Clint Eastwood is attached to direct and Beyonce Knowles is set for the lead role previously played by Janet Gaynor, Barbra Streisand and (definitively) Judy Garland; Bale could conceivably step into the character of Beyonce’s alcoholic star in decline husband, though it’s yet to be confirmed that that’s the role he’d play. General objections to this project aside, it doesn’t seem the best move for Bale for a few reasons. First, it’d probably be Beyonce’s show, and she already covered a lot of the same ground with her plotline in Dreamgirls. And then there’s the nagging fact that a contemporary update of the classic Hollywood tale sounds so very Glitter. Bale’s the kind of actor who deserves meatier stuff than serving as a foil to a pop star-turned-actress, even if James Mason killed in the role (and earned an Oscar nod) in George Cukor’s 1954 rendition. Gold Bale could also re-team with his Public Enemies director Michael Mann on Gold, a contemporary thriller about gold prospectors that has a script by Paul Haggis. Mann most recently produced the upcoming Texas Killing Fields and is executive producing HBO’s Luck, which debuts in September. With a reference like Treasure of the Sierra Madre bandied about among precious little other details on Gold, it’s reasonable to think Bale anchoring an ensemble of ruthless modern-day speculators is a good idea. Out of the Furnace Filmmaker Scott Cooper directed Jeff Bridges to an Oscar in Crazy Heart (which earned another Oscar for Best Song and a Best Supporting Actress nod for Maggie Gyllenhaal) in his directorial debut. His next project, Out of the Furnace (formerly The Low Dweller) could make for an intense vehicle for Bale in the role of an ex-con out to avenge the death of his brother. Oldboy Then again, no role out there may match the intensity (and all-out violence) in Oldboy, Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 Korean cult film. The synopsis, from Relativity Media, tells the story of a man “who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement.” Anyone familiar with the original knows exactly how far and how twisted the tale goes, but suffice to say few A-listers out there could pull the role off with the visceral power that Bale brings to the screen. This project has my vote, but it’s another psychologically demanding role; is Bale — known for his extreme methods of preparation — up for such a taxing role on the heels of his Batman obligations? [Update: Variety now notes that Bale would play the villain in Oldboy.] Noah Teaming up with director Darren Aronofsky on Aronofsky’s ambitious $130M Biblical retelling would be risky, for sure; remember what happened the last time the Black Swan director went full bore with a budget that big? (I’ll just say it: The Fountain.) And yet, there’s a strangely compelling pull in the idea of seeing Bale as a bearded, driven Noah, gathering the world’s creatures into a ginormous boat in a full-scale fantasy end-of-the-world epic that Aronofsky’s been obsessing about all his life. In light of the choices above, which project would you like to see Bale take on next? Chime in below. (Write-in answers welcome, if you have other films in mind. Like Swing Kids 2: Swing Harder, perhaps?)

R.I.P. Frank Potenza

Frank Potenza, a former New York City police officer and security guard who found a second career as a regular on his nephew Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, died early this morning. He was 77. Potenza, a Korean War veteran, joined ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2003 as guard and cast member. Known as Uncle Frank, he was often paired in comedy bits with Guillermo Rodriguez, a real-life parking lot security guard for the show. He also did location pieces with his ex-wife, chronicling their stints on a diary farm, learning self-defense, etc. “Frank Potenza was beloved by his co-workers and considered an uncle to all,” JKL said in a statement. “His kindness and humor will be missed by everyone he touched.”

VIDEO: David Cross, Keith Olbermann Redeem 17 Minutes of Awkward Chatter with Arrested Development Update

David Cross appeared on Countdown on Monday night, where host Keith Olbermann coaxed an update about the development of the long-gestating movie adaptation of Arrested Development. And that’s when things got awkward. From the subject of Michael Cera’s physical appearance (Olbermann says he looks the same today as he did on the series, Cross politely corrects him) to Jason Bateman’s choppy recent output (Cross: “You guys got a beef, you can take it up with him”) to Olbermann’s insomnia-curing “Lizzie Montgomery” story, this is 17 minutes of informational milestones scattered in a cringe-y, wince-y talk-show desert. How did Cross withstand it? Theories abound, but that looks like a lucky and/or mood-altering ballcap if I’ve ever seen one.

'Avengers,' 'John Carter,' 'Brave': The Five Best Presentations at Disney's D23 Expo

Disney gave several 1000 fans a sneak look at its film selection, plus introduced a couple of surprises, in the movie presentation part of D23 Expo, the organization¹s burgeoning Comic-Disadvantage-like convention locked in Anaheim on Saturday. Sean Bailey, production chief for pretty much 2 yrs, stated when assembling his live-action slate, he's led with a quote from Wally themself, which matches something similar to: "I don't make films for kids, I make sure they are for that child in most people, whether we're six of 60." Listed here are 5 presentations that many impressed Warmth Vision: 1. Brave This may be the very best factor being released from the convention. The film, occur medieval Scotland, is really a first for Pixar in a number of ways: Its first story book, its first period movie, and it is first to star a lady character. The storyline follows an experienced archer named Merida, who's having by her parents to marry to be able to keep your peace between your Highland clans. It provides a witch, a demon bear, and stunning animation. Director Mark Andrew and producer Katherine Sarafian, by having an assist from voice stars Kelly Macdonald and Kevin McKidd, demonstrated two clips. Both suggest Pixar sets another high bar for which animation is capable of. It is the second scene that actually impressed. Three dorky suitors have to test their archery abilities to be able to win the girl hands. Merida, however, is the greatest archer within the land, and she or he bests all of them, repel her mother, who attempts to stop her from firing the 3rd and final arrow. VIDEO:'Avengers' Robert Downey Junior. and Chris Hemsworth On Hypothetical Fight Between Thor and Iron Guy The moments show Pixar at its best: they're funny, dramatic and action-packed, and every character is really dramatically attracted that you simply become mounted on them quickly. The slow-motion shot of Merida firing the final arrow like a total act of defiance to her mother had the crowd with each other holding its breath. 2. John Carter Almost a tie for to begin with, this live-action adaptation from the Edgar Grain Burroughs book may be the most ambitious film since Avatar. But many people don't fully realize much about this. "This is actually the very first time I heard anything about this,Inch a lady named Desi told us following the presentation. VIDEO:'John Carter' at D23: Taylor Kitsch and Andrew Stanton Have confidence in Existence on Another Planet The 4 clips revealed possibly probably the most thought-out world since James Cameron produced The planet pandora. The storyline focuses on a broken Civil War vet who's moved to Mars, where dueling races vie for supremacy. (Burroughs authored his tales at any given time when Mars was considered to have the ability to support breathing, and also the tales tend to be more fantasy than sci-fi.) The clips displayed aspects of drama, romance, action and cute humor, positioning the film like a modern-day The Exorcist, whether it works. (Which may be ironic, since John Carter books were a The Exorcist inspiration.) The Martian world looks credible and real, and left many (certainly me) feeling such as the March 9, 2012 release date will not be around fast enough. 3. The Avengers. Do we have to even explain ourselves? (More information here) 4.Frankenweenie Only glimpses in the movie were proven because it's still early going, but this may be the best Tim Burton movie because the the nineteen nineties, possibly even since A Nightmare Before Christmas. Burton is returning to a brief film he did back in 1984, but this time around like a stop-motion animated feature. And it is in glorious black & whitened. The appearance of the figures, the off-kilter sensibility and the feel of the film may have Burton fans salivating, and it'll hopefully bring new fans in to the fold. The storyline, in regards to a boy named Frankenstein, who brings his dog Sparky to existence after it's wiped out within an accident-well, let us permit this to youthful fan we met with an escalator say why he likes Frankenweenie: "Nearly everyone's lost a dog.Inch VIDEO:'Avengers' Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson Talk Fight Moments and Injuries Disney might be looking at a retailing found diamond with this particular movie. Everybody will wish to have their very own Sparky along with other awesome figures. 5. The Muppets Disney has a little of the tricky wire act to do with this particular movie. It needs to attract the generation that first fell deeply in love with the Muppet figures within the late seventies through the Television show and also the early movies, in addition to to an alternative generation of babies. To date, balance from the marketing has centered on the grown ups , using the stylish parodies of Eco-friendly Lantern, The Hangover, and romantic comedies. The 2 large clips proven on Saturday were effective and appeared to effectively hit both decades. The first made fun of the movie trope, the lengthy-lost character entering view to angelic music (among the discloses here's that the bus full of choir people is driving by). It had been funny. VIDEO: 'The Muppets' at D23: Jason Segel Discusses Their Comedy Influence The 2nd clip, also humorous, featured a montage from the Muppets cleaning their old theater set to Starship's We Built This City. This second clip might be telling. The crowd was whistling and foot-tapping towards the music the 30-and-40-year olds were taken up inside a song using their childhood, however the more youthful set, weaned about the music of Glee within the last couple of years, was immediately together. Speaking with a participants in the Convention Center food court (because that is what we all do at Warmth Vision), The Muppets really was this group's top choice from everything they'd observed in the presentations. "This felt like Jim Henson was still being alive," stated one guy, who rejected to provide his age apart from to express "early thirties." The presentations were popular using the audience. Saturday's sell-in the 17,000 tickets during the day was proof of strength of Disney. The only real hiccup, expressed by a number of fans, was the possible lack of audience interaction using the filmmakers and talent. VIDEO: 'Avengers' Tom Hiddleston Talks the Return of Loki The entire presentation, a lot more than two-and-a-half hrs, moved rapidly and effectively, however, many stars only had time for any quick wave and hello, departing fanswanting more, and never in a great way. Maybe the next time, something charged because the ultimate fan event should permit a couple of Q&As. If you need to split up the panel into two periods, so whether it is. The crowd will still adore you. Email: Borys.Package@thr.com Twitter: @Borys_Package Avengers Chris Hemsworth Robert Downey Junior. Scarlett Johansson Taylor Kitsch Pixar John Carter of Mars

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Get Cozy in New 'Rum Diary' Photo

Johnny Depp returns to Hunter S. Thompson territory in 'The Rum Diary,' but not as the drug-raddled mess he was in the hallucinogenic 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' In a new still from 'The Rum Diary,' he looks calm, cool and collected as an American ex-pat living in 1950s Puerto Rico. Depp is seen putting the moves on Amber Heard, whose character is dating one of his friends, played by Aaron Eckhart. (Honestly, we thought that was Scarlett Johansson rocking that retro 'do on first glimpse.) Bruce Robinson, director of the '80s British cult hit 'Withnail & I,' directs from the Thompson novel, which was written in 1959 but not published until 1998. Richard Jenkins, Michael Rispoli and Giovanni Ribisi co-star in the film, which opens October 28. Read the synopsis after the jump. Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson which initiated his long, distinguished and brilliantly unpredictable career, 'The Rum Diary' tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, the San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the late-'50s version of Hemingway's "The Lost Generation," Paul soon becomes increasingly obsessed with Chenault (Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals." 'Snow White' Writer to Pen Universal's 'Emily the Strange' (Exclusive)

Cosmic Debris Melisa Wallack, who wrote the script that became Relativity's high-profile Snow White project, has been drafted by Universal to pen Emily the Strange. Chloe Moretz is attached to star as the punky goth cult figure created by skateboarder Rob Reger. Dark Horse's Mike Richardson is producing. Dark Horse Entertainment has been developing the character as a movie project since 2008, setting it up at Universal in 2010. The story line is being kept under wraps, although the aim is to tell the origin of the punk and gothic figure and how she comes to gain her abilities that fuse technology and imagination. The story will also focus on her relationship with four cats: troublemaker Sabbath, schemer Nee-Chee, imaginative Miles and leader Mystery. Reger is executive producing alongside Dark Horse's Keith Goldberg. There is a certain amount of irony in Wallack's hiring since Universal has been engaged in a cat-and-mouse game of one-upmanship with Relativity over competing Snow White movies. Universal is about to start shooting Snow White and the Huntsman while Relativity is in production on its untitled movie starring Lilly Collins and Julia Roberts. Wallack wrote the spec script that has become Relativity's tentpole to be released March 16, 2012. Wallack, repped by ICM attorney Howard Abramson, wrote and co-directed Meet Bill, a 2007 indie starring Aaron Eckhart and Jessica Alba, as well as Science Fair, which is set up at End Game Entertainment. Both scripts were on the Black List.
